MDC (Miami Dade College) History:

This college was initially established in 1959 on a farm of a county high school. Initially, it was a segregated institution but after 1962 both the white and black students were allowed to join the college together. In 1963 its first building was constructed. Peter Masiko was the first president of MDC and he remained president of the college for 18 years. Over time new college campuses were opened across the county. Initially, the open admission policy was adopted. Anyone who was able to afford the fee can take the admission. Also, a purpose build medical center was started in Allied Health and Nursing (RN) programs.

In 1980 the refugees and Cuban exiles were increased so the outreach center of the college was built in Hialeah city to provide educational opportunities. Another outreach center was built in 1990 in Homestead. Also, the InterAmerican center was built to facilitate the bilingual education. In the mid-1990s, the college faced financial issues due to reduced state’s education budget. The college started its successful alumni campaign in the late 1990s. While in 2001 college implemented its plan to achieve its recruiting goals. In 2002 college allowed its Honors Program and start Honors College for high achievers of high school graduates.

In the year 2006, Miami Dade College enrolled 1.5 million students while in 2007 the college expanded its dual-language program and it opened a new horizon for the local and international students. The MDC Honors College Dual Language Program gained a high rank in innovation in 2009. In 2018, Miami Dade College gained a prize of $1 million from Aspen Institute.
